The National Lottery was the original name given to the main UK lottery but in 2002 the game was rebranded as Lotto.
Lotto is the main game in the UK and there are draws twice weekly, on a Wednesday and Saturday unless Christmas day falls on one of these days in which case the draw is moved to Christmas Eve. The matrix for the UK Lotto is 6/49 and boasts just 5 chances of winning. This is one of just a handful of lotteries that doesn't use two drums for their draws as although there is a bonus element, this only comes into play for one of the prize tiers only – 5 main numbers and the bonus ball – so is drawn from the same drum alongside the six main numbers.
Should no one match all six main numbers on any given draw then a rollover takes place but the UK Lotto only allows a jackpot to roll four times and then it must be won. This rule came into force on 10th February 2011 and should no one match the 6 main numbers of the fifth week then the prize pool will be rolled down to the lower prize tiers starting with 5 main numbers and the bonus ball. Should there not be any winners at this level then the prize rolls down again to the players who have matched 5 main numbers only.

For each draw a new machine is chosen and a new set of balls. There are fourteen different draw machines, one of which (Magnum) is a designated spare machine and has yet to be used. There are also fourteen sets of numbered balls. The draw machine and set of balls for each draw is chosen at random.
The minimum jackpot varies on the midweek and weekend draws with a standard, non-rollover draw on a Wednesday boasting an estimated jackpot of £2.4 million whilst this increases for a Saturday draw to approximately £4.4 million. Of all the five prize tiers the only one that remains static is that for matching three main numbers. The remaining tiers pay out a percentage of the prize fund as follows:
- Match 4 – 22% of the remaining prize fund
- Match 5 – 10% of the remaining prize fund
- Match 5 and the bonus balls – 16% of the remaining prize fund
- Match 6 – 52% of the remaining prize fund

Lotto Plus 5
Players in the UK who play the Lotto have the option to pay an extra fee and have their chosen numbers entered into extra daily draws for the Lotto Plus 5 game. This game plays every day that a Lotto draw is not made. For example if a player bought a ticket for a Saturday draw and ticket the Lotto Plus 5 option then their numbers would be entered into further draws on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. A player doing the same for a Wednesday draw would be entered into the Lotto Plus 5 draw for Thursday, Friday and Saturdays. All of the five prize tiers for this game have static prizes:
