Mega Millions Lottery
MegaMillions, along with Powerball, is one of the ‘big two’ multi-state lottery games in the US and is played in 43 different states plus the District of Columbia and U.S. Virgin Islands. Draws take place twice a week in Atlanta, Georgia, on Tuesday and Friday nights at 23.00 Eastern Time.
MegaMillions jackpots have a minimum value of US$15 million and if no player wins the jackpot then it will roll over to the next draw. As there is no limit to the number of times the jackpot can rollover, jackpots regularly exceed US$100 million and MegaMillions currently holds the world record for the biggest jackpot ever won when, in March 2012, three ticket holders shared a jackpot worth US$656 million.

Buying MegaMillions Lottery Tickets
MegaMillions is played by selecting five main numbers between 1 and 75 and one Mega Ball number between 1 and 15. The jackpot is won by matching all six numbers although there are a further eight prize tiers offering guaranteed cash prizes for matching fewer numbers. The only state to not offer guaranteed prizes is California as all lottery wins within the state are pari-mutuel, which means they are calculated based on ticket sales and the number of winners in each prize tier.
The overall odds of winning a prize on MegaMillions are 1 in 15, although the odds of winning in each prize tier vary. The following table illustrates the odds of winning in each prize tier.
|Match||Odds of Winning||Prize|
|Match 5 and Mega||1 in 258,890,850||Jackpot|
|Match 5||1 in 18,492,204||$1 million|
|Match 4 and Mega||1 in 739,688||$5,000|
|Match 4||1 in 52,835||$500|
|Match 3 and Mega||1 in 10,720||$50|
|Match 3||1 in 766||$5|
|Match 2 and Mega||1 in 473||$5|
|Match 1 and Mega||1 in 56||$2|
|Mega only||1 in 21||$1|
Players in some states can choose to increase the value of any non-jackpot prize by playing the Megaplier. This is similar to the Power Play option in Powerball except prizes can be multiplied between two and five times depending on the Megaplier number drawn after the main game. Playing the Megaplier costs an additional fee but there is no doubt that it could pay off handsomely as a US$1 million MegaMillions prize winner could see their prize increased to between US$2 and US$5 million!
