Florida Lottery Posts Record-Breaking $5.6 Billion in Sales

Wednesday July 9th 2014

The Florida Lottery has announced that they generated over $5.36 billion in lottery sales last year, with $1.49 billion of the proceeds being allocated to support Florida students and schools. This is the second year in a row in which lottery ticket sales exceeded $5 billion, making Florida second only to New York for lottery ticket sales. The increased revenue in recent years is thanks to the state’s participation in the Mega Millions Lottery and the rising popularity of scratch-off lottery games. These instant-win games made up 63 percent of all sales in 2013.

The Florida Lottery Secretary, Cynthia O’Connell, stated that “our primary goal is and always will be to generate as much money as possible for education.” She added that the Florida Lottery had “exceeded” the sales goals set for the year, which resulted in “record contributions” to the education system in the Sunshine State.

Since its inception in 1988, the Florida Lottery has raised more than $26 billion for education and over 650,000 students have received a college education thanks to the Lottery’s Bright Futures Scholarship.
