Record Powerball Jackpot Finally Won by Three Ticket Holders

Thursday January 14th 2016

The wait to find a winner of the $1.58 billion Powerball jackpot is finally over. Wednesday night’s drawing saw the huge prize, which had been steadily growing since the latter stages of 2015, snapped up by three exceedingly lucky ticket holders, each pocketing a share of the largest lottery prize in history. The winners, from California, Florida and Tennessee, will each claim $528.8 million and will no doubt be overjoyed with the result. The celebrations began early in California, where crowds descended on a 7-Eleven store in Chino Hills that had sold one of the winning tickets.

The all important Powerball numbers for the main game were 4, 8, 19, 27 and 34 and the Powerball was 10. A further 73 players will be also be celebrating, after they matched five main balls, taking home $1 million each. Of these players, eight benefited from Power Play, securing themselves an extra $1 million when they matched the Power Play number, which was 2. An additional 23,067,235 prizes were claimed, ranging from a satisfying $4 to a very tasty $50,000.

Following a frenzy of ticket buying across America, anxiety levels reached new heights before the drawing as every Powerball player collectively dreamed of taking home over $1.5 billion. The prize takes its place in the record books as the largest jackpot ever offered by a lottery and dwarfs the previous U.S. record jackpot, set by Mega Millions in 2012, by more than $900 million. Needless to say, the winners of the gigantic prize, whose identities are yet to be revealed, will write their names into Powerball folklore. However, due to the jackpot being split between a trio of victors, Gloria MacKenzie of Florida will be able to rest a little easier today, safe in the knowledge that her record as the single biggest winner of a Powerball grand prize (worth $590.5 million) remains intact.

The drawing on Saturday 17th January will now see Powerball fans competing for $40 million. To be in with a chance of winning this jackpot you’ll need to purchase your tickets before the drawing. These can be bought online or from authorized Powerball retailers. Best of luck!
