Powerball is a massively popular lottery game that is offered to players in 43 states and two jurisdictions in the United States of America. The Powerball Lottery name is derived from the fact that, in order to win the jackpot, players need to match not only the five main numbers from the range 1 to 59, but also the red Powerball number from the range 1 to 35. The Powerball Lottery jackpot is always worth at least $40 million, but rollovers can help it to climb even higher with the biggest jackpot on record a huge US$590.5 million won by a single ticket purchased in Florida in May 2013!

Buying Powerball Lottery Tickets
There are two Powerball lottery games every week, one on Wednesday and the other on Friday. Purchasing a single ticket entitles the player to enter one line of numbers (five main numbers and a Powerball number) and there are nine ways to win a prize. The numbers required to win the various Powerball lottery prizes, and the odds of winning in each case, are as shown in the table below:
|Numbers Matched||Odds of Winning||Prize|
|5 main numbers + Powerball||1 in 175,223,510||Jackpot|
|5 main numbers||1 in 5,153,632.64||$1 million|
|4 main numbers + Powerball||1 in 648,975.96||$10,000|
|4 main numbers||1 in 19,087.52||$100|
|3 main numbers + Powerball||1 in 12,244.82||$100|
|3 main numbers||1 in 360.14||$7|
|2 main numbers + Powerball||1 in 706.43||$7|
|1 main number + Powerball||1 in 110.81||$4|
|Powerball only||1 in 55.40||$4|
The overall odds of winning any of the Powerball lottery prizes are approximately 1 in 31.84, so although winning the jackpot outright is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, winning one of the more modest prizes is something that regular players can, with a little luck, celebrate again and again.
Powerball players, excluding those in California, can choose to increase the value of all prizes except the jackpot and Match 5 prize by playing the Power Play. The Power Play prizes are multiplied between two and five times depending on the Power Play number drawn after the main game. Players who match five main numbers will win a set $2 million instead of the standard $1 million prize. The Power Play costs an additional fee to play.
