Powerball
Powerball is one of two multi-state lotteries available in the USA. It was only in October 2009 that the Megamillions consortium agreed that US lotteries could sell tickets for both the Mega Millions and Powerball games. 10 states who previously only sold Mega Millions tickets started selling Powerball tickets in January 2010. Currently Powerball lottery tickets are sold in more jurisdictions than Megamillions, but only by one state.

Participating players have nine chances to be a winner on the current matrix of 5/59 and 1/35. To win the jackpot players need to match 5 "white" balls and the "red" Powerball. Powerball also offers the Powerplay option for an extra charge where winning tickets can see any prize multiplied by matching the drawn Power Play number.
Draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday and can be seen on a multitude of television stations dependent on the state you are viewing from. Each draw takes place at 10.59 pm (EST) and two drums are used to store the balls; one for the white main balls and the other for the red Powerball numbers.
Winning players have two options when claiming a jackpot prize for Powerball; cash or a graduated annuity paid in yearly instalments for 30 years. If the latter option is chosen then the annual payment increases each year by 4%. The choice has to be made at different times dependent on the state the Powerball ticket has been purchased in. For example with the exception of Florida and Missouri, players have to make the choice within 60 days of winning a jackpot. In New Jersey and Texas this decision has to be made when purchasing your ticket whilst in Idaho you have 30 days to make a decision.

Match 5 Bonus Prize
On occasion, when the Powerball jackpot reaches a jackpot level that produces a "new" record then the increase to the jackpot for each draw can be limited to no more than $25 million. If this happens then an prize money exceeding the $25 million limit is added into a new prize tier, the Match 5 Bonus prize. This prize is paid out in one cash lump sum.
Should the Match 5 Bonus Prize come into play then it is worth noting that this is in addition to any Power Play prizes on offer. However this new prize tier cannot be multiplied. Should no winners fall into the Match 5 category, which is highly unlikely, then the bonus prize pool will fall to the next tier of winners, Match 4 + Powerball.
