The wife of one of America’s biggest ever lottery winners thought her husband was having a heart attack after discovering he’d won $190million. Jim McCullar, a retiree from Washington state, came forward yesterday to claim half of Tuesday night’s $380million Mega Millions jackpot prize. The second winner, who bought their fortune-making ticket in the state of Idaho, remains unidentified.

According to a report by Reuters news agency, Mr McCullar suffers from heart problems and has had three heart attacks in the past. When his wife saw him shaking on Tuesday night she thought the worst, but he was simply recovering from the shock of becoming an instant lottery multi-millionaire.

Clearly a sensible man, Mr McCullar handed his over-sized cheque straight to his wife Carolyn.

“I know what to do with this,” he said. “We have been married 41 years.”

The McCullars, who have six children, will be given the option of accepting their winnings in 26 instalments, or taking a lump sum of $90million.

Mr McCullar said: “What this means to me is, the legacy is going to go generation to generation, they’ll never have to worry, we’ll never blow this.”
