Happy New Year for Canadian Lotto Max players

Tuesday January 11th 2011

A pair of Canadian lottery players who live less than two hours apart in the country’s Saskatchewan province have started the new year in style by each winning $1million. One of the tickets was purchased by 20-year-old apprentice electrician, Conrad Keturakis. He spent $20 on a Lotto Max ticket which has resulted in him becoming one of the province’s youngest lottery winners.

Speaking yesterday at a press conference in Regina, he said: “Usually, I just get a free coffee or maybe a McDonald’s meal out of it. This is a big change.”

Tara and Jason Duhaime also had good reason to crack open the champagne after deciding to buy lottery tickets. According to The Vancouver Sun newspaper, Tara telephoned her husband while he was driving to work and told him to pull over to the hard shoulder.

He said: “I parked and she told me she had checked the tickets and we had won $1 million. There was a lot of disbelief. I asked her how many times she'd checked it and if it was the right date. And, indeed it was!”

The Duhaimes plan to spend their lottery winnings on their children’s education and paying off debts, while Mr Keturakis says he is considering buying his own home.
