A Massachusetts man has won a $1 million jackpot - for the second time in just a year and a half. Rolf Rhodes, a resident of Mendon, beat steep odds to win the seven-digit prizes.

Rhodes won the first $1 million top prize on May 22, 2018 when he played the "Hit $1,000" Massachusetts Lottery instant win game for $10. The odds of winning were just 1 in 2.1 million.

Rhodes chose the cash option and received a single payout of $650,000 before taxes. He purchased the ticket at Mac Package Store at 96 Prospect Street in Milford.

Then on October 30, 2019, lightning struck twice when Rhodes beat odds of 1 in 1.68 million to win a second $1 million prize on another MA instant game, the "$4,000,000 Instant Jackpot", again spending $10.

This time he opted to have the prize paid as an annuity - he's received the first payment of $50,000 (before taxes) out of a total of 20 yearly payments.

Rhodes purchased his ticket at the Imperial Gas and Country Store located at 1 Millville Road in Mendon. The store is just three miles away from the location where he purchased the first winning ticket. The store will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket.

While Rhodes' wins are spectacularly lucky, you may be surprised to learn that he is not the only Massachusetts resident to have won multiple million-dollar prizes - there have been three others in 2019 alone!

  • March 2019: James Peddle of Barre won $1 million on an instant win game, five years after he won $10 million on another instant ticket.
  • May 2019: Janet Pflaumer-Phillips of Lakeville won $1 million on an instant game - after her husband Kevin had won two $1 million prizes in April 2014 and September 2016.
  • July 2019: Steven Felsher of Arlington won his second $1 million instant game prize in three years.
