Michigan Couple Wins $2 Million Powerball Prize

Sunday February 3rd 2019

A couple from Genesee County, Michigan, are celebrating a $2 million Powerball prize win from a ticket purchased in Flint. Their ticket matched the five white balls in the January 12 drawing (07-36-48-57-58) to win $1 million. Because they added Power Play, the prize was multiplied to a total $2 million in winnings.

Morris Cummings and Jackie Rowley, who formed the Mo + Jack Lottery Club, bought the winning ticket at Randy’s Food Center, 5272 Miller Road in Flint.

“We stopped to grab a gift for my girlfriend’s cousin on our way to her 21st birthday party,” said Mr. Cummings. “While my girlfriend was shopping, I bought a few Powerball tickets.”

Mr. Cummings did not think about the tickets again until later that night. "After we left the party, we stopped at the bar on our way home. While we were there, I remembered that I had a few Powerball tickets to check," he said. "I checked the numbers on my phone, and at first I thought maybe I was seeing things a bit fuzzy because I’d had a few drinks, so I asked my girlfriend to check the ticket.”

Ms. Rowley confirmed that they had in fact won. “I looked the ticket over and told Morris he was seeing things correctly,” she said. “The party at the bar got better from there!”

Cummings, 53, and Rowley, 42, visited Michigan Lottery headquarters on Friday to claim their multimillion dollar prize. What are their plans for their windfall? The couple want to take a vacation but say they will save the rest of the money. “I can’t explain this feeling at all. It’s been so exciting and we’re both thrilled to have this money in the bank,” Mr. Cummings said.
