Powerball Jackpot Hits $300 Million
Thursday December 21st 2017Powerball players can dream of becoming $300 million richer in time for Christmas after Wednesday’s drawing came and went without a winner. With the top prize in Mega Millions also approaching $250 million, it could be a spectacular festive season for fans of both games.
The Powerball jackpot has not been won since Wednesday 25th October, when a three-person family syndicate from Louisiana won $191.1 million. There have been six other winners this year, including Mavis Wanczyk from Massachusetts, who broke the record for the largest lottery prize won on a single ticket when she pocketed $758.7 million in August.
Christmas Surprise
Hundreds of thousands of players pick up prizes in every draw, but some participants forget to check their tickets and run the risk of missing out on their winnings. One woman from Glenwood in Iowa did not remember to look at the winning numbers for the draw on November 4th for six weeks, but finally came forward on Monday after realising that she had won $1 million.
Karen Harger, who worked with the American Red Cross before retiring, told lottery officials that she usually plays her favorite numbers but decided to go for a Quick Pick entry when she bought her ticket at Casey’s convenience store, 701 32nd Ave. in Council Bluffs.
The 65-year-old now plans to set up savings accounts for her four grandchildren, remodel her home and invest the rest of the money for her retirement. Husband Jim, 55, also has his eyes on a new wood-burning stove.
Mega Millions Jackpot
As well as the huge Powerball jackpot, Mega Millions’ top prize has soared to $247 million ahead of the final drawing before Christmas on Friday night. The Mega Millions jackpot has not been won since a number of changes were made to the game in late October, but it is beginning to grow much more quickly.
