Powerball Jackpot of $435 Million Won in Indiana

Thursday February 23rd 2017

An Indiana Powerball player became the first jackpot winner of 2017 last night, winning $435.3 million by matching all six numbers drawn. The total had been rising since a Pennsylvania couple claimed £121.6 million on a ticket bought in Delaware on December 17 and is the seventh biggest top prize in the game’s history.

The winner is the 39th Hoosier to hit the Powerball jackpot, consolidating Indiana’s position as the game’s most successful state. Second on the list is Missouri, with 31 winners, and Minnesota completes the top three, having produced 22 jackpot successes. Last night’s top prize pool, which shot up from an estimated £403 million thanks to a surge of last-minute ticket sales, is the largest ever won in the state.

The lucky ticket holder, who has 180 days to come forward and claim their prize, matched the numbers 10, 13, 28, 52 and 61 with Powerball 2 to snap up the extraordinary sum. A further six players matched the five main numbers alone to win $1 million and one Match 5 winner did so after adding Power Play to their ticket, earning them a $2 million windfall. The full prize breakdown for Wednesday February 22nd can be found at the Powerball Numbers page.

In July last year, an Indiana couple celebrated another gigantic lottery win for the Hoosier State when they picked up $536 million on Mega Millions. The pair opted to receive the cash lump sum, which worked out at around $271 million after taxes and was paid to the Warren D LLC trust, enabling the winners to remain anonymous.

Powerball returns on Saturday night with a jackpot worth $40 million and you can play by picking up tickets from authorized retailers in any of the participating states and jurisdictions.
