Ryanair scratchcard winner eats ticket

Wednesday March 3rd 2010

Often we hear of lottery winners doing some strange things but this latest stunt seems to rank highest of them all. The news that a Ryanair scratchcard winner eats his winning ticket on board a flight bound for the East Midlands airport shocked cabin crew and passenger alike. The winning ticket was worth €10,000 and after being told he could not claim mid-flight for such a large sum and would need to contact the lottery operators directly, the man became irate causing him to eat his scratchcard ticket.

This has obviously proved expensive for the lottery winner, as the consumption of his ticket now means it is invalid, but Ryanair and Brand Force who run this on board scratchcards game have now decided that they will donate this lottery sum to charity. All Ryanair passengers are able to vote on which charity this should be and the poll closes on 5th March.

Amusingly enough, one of the choices is for an eating disorder charity, along with a disruptive children’s charity, a gamblers charity, a mental health charity and an anger management charity. It will be interesting to see which one of these causes benefits from this lottery win.

When you buy lottery tickets or scratchcards you are always aware that larger prizes need to be claimed through the operator direct and this one is no different.  A spokesman for Ryanair said ‘passengers are always delighted to claim their larger lottery wins after returning home’. Unfortunately this was not the case for this lottery winner who sadly, may live to regret this move for a very long time.
