Thursday August 24th 2017

One player in Massachusetts has won the largest amount ever on a single lottery ticket, scooping the whole Powerball jackpot of $758.7 million on Wednesday 23rd August. The winner has yet to come forward, but when they do they will have the tricky choice between taking the annuity option of settling for a cash lump sum of over $480 million.

The previous record was set by Gloria MacKenzie all the way back in 2013 when she won $590.5 million on her own, and the then 84-year-old Florida resident opted for the cash lump sum of $370.8 million. Since then we have had the record-breaking Powerball draw which had a jackpot of $1.58 billion, but that draw was eventually won by three tickets that scooped $528.8 million apiece.

After the previous Powerball draw the jackpot was announced to be $650 million, but after only a few days this was raised to the pre-draw jackpot total of $700 million. On Wednesday, social media was running wild with pictures of people queueing out the door of their local grocery stores to buy a ticket, so it was no surprise that on draw night the jackpot was once again raised to the whopping $758.7 million.

The numbers drawn on the night were 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26, with Powerball 4. As well as the jackpot winner, there were 40 players, including six who opted for Power Play, who matched five main numbers without the Powerball to become instant millionaires. Visit the Powerball Numbers page to find out more about the results.

The 20 rollovers that occurred before this jackpot meant this will be the first person to match all five main numbers and the Powerball since June 10th, and the longest set of rollovers since January 2016.

The jackpot-winning ticket was sold at Pride Station & Store, in Chicopee, north of Springfield, and the winner now has a year to come forward and claim their prize. More details about the lucky winner will be released in the coming days, so make sure you regularly check our news page for updates.
