Two Share Record Oz Jackpot

Wednesday July 1st 2009

Two lucky players have won a share of the biggest ever lottery jackpot in Australia. The Oz Lotto jackpot was worth a staggering AU$106 million, so each of the winning lottery tickets has won AU$53 million for the owners. Talking of the owners, one lives in South Australia and the other in Queensland, but both winners have asked to remain anonymous, at least for the time being.

The AU$106 million jackpot came after no less than ten Oz Lotto draws without an outright winner. It had been predicted that the record jackpot would be worth around AU$90 million, but demand for tickets far exceeded expectations and reports suggest that no less than 10 million Australians participated in the game.

The two winners who managed to get their dream lottery results will receive their share of the jackpot as a single tax-free lump sum. That compares very well with lotteries in America, where jackpot winners either take a smaller lump sum or a series of annual instalments, and where the winnings themselves are taxable.

The previous record jackpot in Australia was worth AU$58.7 million. That record was set in 2008, and the new 2009 record is almost twice as large, so it may be some time before the Oz Lotto jackpot gets close to setting yet another Australian lottery record.

Now that the Oz Lotto dry spell has come to an end, the jackpot has been reset and there is AU$2 million up for grabs on Tuesday 7 July, 2009. Buy lottery tickets online and you can participate no matter where you are. Good luck!
