Pick 5
Launched in June 2023, Pick 5 is the Virginia Lottery game which offers a variety of prizes, including the chance to win up to $50,000. There are several ways to play and a Fireball feature that gives you even more ways to win.
Drawings take place twice a day. There’s an early afternoon draw, known as the Day draw, which is held at 1:59 PM ET, and a Night draw at 11 PM ET. Ticket sales stop at 1:53 PM for the Day draw and 10:45 PM for the night draw.
How to Play
When you play Pick 5, you can choose your play amount, play type and how many draws you want to enter. The options are all there for you on your playslip. You can then select a five-digit number from 00000 to 99999, either by choosing it yourself or using an Easy Pick to let the computer generate a random set for you.
A key decision is how you want to play, and you can choose between these different types of entry:
- Exact Order: This play type requires you to match all five winning digits in the same positions as they are drawn.
- Any Order: The numbers you pick must all be drawn for you to win, but the order doesn’t matter.
- 50/50: You split the cost between an Exact Order play and an Any Order play. You win both parts of the prize if your numbers are drawn in the order you predicted, or you can win just part of the prize if they appear in a different order.
You can spend $0.50 or $1 per play, and opt whether to enter just the next Day draw, the Night draw, or both. It is possible to play the same numbers in as many as 91 consecutive draws by using the Multi-Draw option.
Fireball
Fireball is an optional feature that you can add to your Pick 5 play to boost your chances of winning. It will double the cost of a play, but it could reward you with a great payout.
The Fireball itself is a sixth number from 0 to 9 that is randomly selected as part of the draw. You can replace any of the five main winning numbers with the Fireball to create a winning combination. For example, if you pick the numbers 12345 and the winning digits are 12349, this would not give you a win in the base game. If the Fireball is a 5, you can swap it in for the 9 that was drawn and you have yourself a prize.
