After careful deliberation, the Kentucky Lottery Corporation has decided to partner with GTECH to offer online games to its customers. The change will allow anyone located within the Bluegrass State to buy tickets on their smartphones, tablets or computers.

Kentucky Lottery CEO Arch Gleason insisted that the move was designed to maximize their efforts to support education while making games more attractive to consumers, who are making purchases online in ever larger numbers. “It’s vital we stay up to date with our products, as students across the Commonwealth depend on us for scholarship and grant proceeds,” he said.

The Kentucky Lottery is currently $8.2 million below budget for this year as sales for draw games like Powerball and Mega Millions have dropped dramatically. Turning towards online gaming may help boost revenue.

GTECH, the company chosen by the Kentucky Lottery to develop the program, works closely with a number of state lotteries. Recently, the company announced that the Missouri Lottery had awarded them a seven-year contract that would see them introduce new gaming systems, upgraded technology and new lottery machines in addition to the services that they already provide.

The new online lottery system will hopefully be launched in Kentucky later next year. GTECH will receive a percentage of total sales raised during the four-year contract.
