In November 1969 voters approved the State Lottery with an overwhelming majority vote of 81.5% as part of the state's general election. However the first ever New Jersey Lottery ticket was not sold until December 16th, 1970. The New Jersey Lottery currently runs six different lottery games of which two are the multi-state lotteries Powerball and MegaMillions. Of the current games offered by this state lottery Pick It was the first to be introduced as a daily game in May 1975. This changed in 1987 to the version available now called Pick 3.

Winnings over $5,000 from the New Jersey Lottery games are subject to a minimum of 25% tax although winners with no Social Security number are subject to a 30% federal income tax deduction on winnings over $599.50. Unlike many other states in the USA the New Jersey Lottery requires that players have to choose cash or annuity when playing rather than after they have won. Pick 6 Lotto

The game started in May 1980 and original had a 6/36 matrix. This is increased to a 6/39 in June 1984, to a 6/42 in February 1986 and a 6/46 in January 1989 before the current matrix was introduced in September 2000.

The current matrix for this game is 6/49 and Pick 6 Lotto has a total of four prize tiers; match 6, match 5, match 4 and match 3. The match 3 prize tier is the only static prize. The minimum jackpot to be offered by the New Jersey Pick 6 Lotto is $2 million but has been known to be over $45 million. The prize odds for Pick 6 are as follows:

Powerball and Megamillions

In May 2002 the New Jersey Lottery replaced the "Big Game" by joining Mega Millions. When the MUGL allowed state lotteries to sell both multi-state lotteries New Jersey started selling Powerball tickets in January 2010.
