Cory Thone, spokesman for the KS Lottery, stated: “Double Play is an add-on feature that gives players in select jurisdictions another chance to match their Powerball numbers in a separate drawing with a top cash prize of $10 million.”

Double Play will be introduced in Kansas in time for the draw on September 22, so from that date onwards you will be able to add the option whenever you purchase a Powerball ticket in the Sunflower State.

Even if you miss out on a prize in the main draw, Double Play gives you another opportunity. It has a fixed top prize of $10 million, rather than a rolling jackpot, and there are eight other ways to win too. Six of the nine payouts on offer are even higher than the equivalent prize in the main draw!

“If a player wants to add more chances to win, then this provides that without adjusting the base price of a play of the game,” Thone said. “One Powerball ticket remains at just $2.”

It costs an extra $1 to add Double Play, with your numbers then entered into the separate draw which takes place on the same night. It cannot be played as a standalone game, only as an add-on.

To prepare for the launch of Double Play, the multi-draw option for Powerball players will reduce by one with each passing draw until the game begins on September 22, and then it will reset to 15.

A History of Double Play

Powerball Double Play began back in August 2021. It was initially offered by just 13 state lotteries, but it is now available in almost twice as many locations. Kansas will become the 25th participating state.

The first jackpot-winning ticket was sold in Maryland, but there was a cruel twist in the story as the player failed to come forward within the claim period and therefore missed out on their $10 million prize.

The jackpot has subsequently been won numerous times across various states, so make sure to give it a go if you are located in a participating state. The winning numbers are published alongside the Powerball results every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evening.
