History of the Louisiana Lottery

The Louisiana Lottery was created in 1991 as a way to generate revenue for the state without raising taxes thanks to a constitutional amendment passed by voters in 1990. The first scratch-off games went on sale on September 6th, 1991 and Powerball tickets went on sale in the state in 1995. The state joined the Mega Millions game in November 2011.

As of July 2004, Louisiana Lottery proceeds raised through ticket sales are allocated to the Minimum Foundation Program, which helps raise money for K-12 education in the state. Out of every dollar in ticket sales, 35.5 cents is transferred to the State Treasury to help children across the state receive the education they need to succeed in every stage of their lives.

Playing Louisiana Lottery Games

In addition to offering Powerball and Mega Millions, Louisiana Lottery players can also participate in some in-state games.

Lotto is the state's main game, having started in January 1992. The jackpot starts at $250,000 and rolls over until it is won. Players pay $1 per line and select six numbers from 1 to 40 or choose a Quick Pick to have numbers randomly selected for them. Drawings take place every Wednesday and Saturday evenings (apart from Christmas Day). To win the jackpot, players must match all six main numbers drawn. Here's a breakdown of how it works:

Winning Tier Prize Odds of Winnings
Match 6 of 6 Jackpot 1 in 3,838,380
Match 5 of 6 Estimated $2,000 (pari-mutuel) 1 in 18,816
Match 4 of 6 Estimated $50 (pari-mutuel) 1 in 456
Match 3 of 6 $3 1 in 32
Overall odds of winning any Lotto prize are 1 in 30
