History of the West Virginia Lottery

The West Virginia Lottery was established in November 1984 when the Legislature approved an amendment to the state's constitution. The Lottery Act was then passed in April 1985 and the West Virginia Lottery began selling tickets on January 9th, 1986. That first day was a huge success as residents snapped up over 1.5 million tickets.

Since the day it began operating, the West Virginia Lottery has raised more than $3.3 billion for public education, $828 million for programs benefiting senior citizens and $805 million to tourism, parks and natural resources.

Playing the West Virginia Lottery can net you big prizes, but you'll also have the chance to help improve vital services for you and others in your state!
