The big win comes just one week after a ticket in New Jersey scored a $124 million jackpot on July 24.

The California ticket matched all six numbers in the Friday, July 31 draw: the five white balls 12, 35, 46, 48 and 69, plus the gold Mega Ball 23.

The lucky ticket was sold at Chevron on 12464 Limonite Ave in Mira Loma.

The winner has the option to collect the prize as an annuity worth the full $22 million paid as 30 annual instalments, or take the cash option lump sum payment of $17.9 million.

Friday is the fourth time the Mega Millions top prize has gone off in 2020. New Jersey has been particularly lucky this year, scoring two of the wins: in addition to the July 24 jackpot, someone in the Garden State hit a $202 million prize on February 11.

A couple in Glendale, Arizona scooped $414 million and made history as the state's first-ever Mega Millions jackpot winners on June 9 - the largest prize since June 2019.

Friday was also a lucky night for six players who hit the $10,000 Mega Millions third prize. There were a total of 327,606 winners, and the Megaplier was 2X.

This week's jackpots

The Mega Millions jackpot has returned to its guaranteed starting value of $20 million ($16.3 million cash) for the next draw on Tuesday, August 4.

Meanwhile, the Powerball top prize stands at $147 million ($112.7 million cash) for the next draw on Wednesday, August 5.
