Only a few states currently have their own iLottery, while the rest either allow courier services to operate or do not permit ticket sales over the internet at all - preferring to keep the industry retail-based.

Massachusetts already allows courier services such as Jackpot.com to buy tickets on players’ behalf. Now, after a long-running legislative battle to get an iLottery approved in the Bay State, games will soon be available through the MA Lottery directly.

The exact date for the launch has not yet been confirmed, but it is likely to happen in the next couple of months. “It’s going to be the first part of the summer,” said Mark William Bracken, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Lottery, in an interview with LotteryUSA.com.

A couple of games - Keno and The Numbers Game - will remain in-store exclusives as they are regarded as more suited to that experience, but everything else will be offered online. New games will be built too, including Pick 3 and Pick 4.

How Pick 3 and Pick 4 Work

There are versions of Pick 3 and Pick 4 in the majority of states across the country, providing daily draws and lots of flexibility over how to play.

The MA Lottery has not outlined its specific game rules yet, but their games are likely to follow a similar format to other states. To play, you just need to select numbers between 0 and 9 and decide whether you want to try to match them in exact or any order. There are usually other play types where you can combine the two, while it is usually possible to set your own wager amount too.

Prize amounts are fixed for each play type and wager amount, with payouts up to $500 in Pick 3 and $5,000 in Pick 4. Massachusetts will also offer a twist called the Wicked Bonus, which will work like the Fireball or Wild Ball does in other states. “Wicked is kind of a Massachusetts-ized term,” said Bracken.

The Wicked Bonus will be an extra number that is drawn to help create more winning combinations. For example, if you play the combination 1-2-3 in Pick 3 and the numbers drawn are 1-2-7, this would not be a win in the base game. If the Wicked Bonus is a 3, you can swap this number for the 7 and win a prize.

Beyond Pick 3 and Pick 4, Bracken also said there are plans to offer virtual horse racing, with draws every four minutes. Going online will also allow Massachusetts to offer raffles in the future.

Keep an eye on the Massachusetts Lottery page for more information ahead of the launch.
