Mega Millions Jackpot Becomes Biggest of all Time
Saturday August 5th 2023A record Mega Millions jackpot is set to be offered in the next drawing after nobody won Friday night’s $1.35 billion grand prize. The estimated amount for Tuesday night is $1.55 billion.
The grand prize has been rolling since it was last won on April 18, and over the last three and a half months it has steadily built from its starting value all the way into ten figures.
Friday’s draw was the 31st in this current jackpot run, and the numbers drawn were 11, 30, 45, 52 and 56, with a Mega Ball of 20. More than 5 million prizes were paid out in total, but once again there were no tickets that matched all five main numbers plus the Mega Ball.
The jackpot is now set to jump up significantly, with more and more players expected to take part as they go in search of a colossal pay day.
Mega Millions has a rich history in giving away huge jackpots, having already created four billionaires over the past few years, but the current prize is now set to be the biggest of the lot.
The largest prize ever paid out until now was worth $1.537 billion and came back in October 2018. A single ticket from South Carolina matched all the numbers, and the winner ultimately decided to stay anonymous when they came forward several months later.
It remains to be seen whether the winner of this jackpot will have the option to retain their anonymity or whether they will have to go public. It all depends on the rules of the state lottery where the lucky ticket is purchased.
With so many entries set to be sold, it is also possible that the grand prize could be shared. Likewise, there is no guarantee that it will finally be won on Tuesday. It could roll again and surge upwards, way beyond the $1.55 billion mark. It is also possible that the final amount might fall short just short of the existing record of $1.537 billion, as it is just an estimate.
There’s no limit to how high the jackpot can go, so it could even reach $2 billion and potentially become the largest lottery prize ever seen, surpassing the $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot that went to Californian player Edwin Castro last November.
When someone does eventually match all the numbers, they will face a decision over whether to take the jackpot as an annuity, or accept a lump sum. The cash option for Tuesday’s jackpot is $757.2 million.
