The 49-year-old admits he was in a foul mood when he stopped off for a soda at the Marathon gas station at 12018 Liberty Street in Clio. He told Michigan Lottery officials: “I was having the absolute worst day of my life. I was stressed from work and it seemed like everything that could go wrong was going wrong.”

Recalling the moment when he scratched off the ticket and realised he had won, the lucky winner said he felt in a state of shock. He added: “I waited for everyone to leave the store and went back to the clerk and asked her to scan my ticket. She looked it over and hit the floor when she saw I won $2 million.”

Having decided to remain anonymous, the player came forward to Michigan HQ on Tuesday to claim his winnings, opting for the one-off cash sum of around $1.3 million rather than the annuity. He has already set his sights on a new truck and will invest what is left, saying that the main positive is financial security for life.

“Winning the lottery feels great. My wife and I have always found a way to make ends meet, but it hasn't always been easy, so winning is a huge relief,” said the winner.
