Million Dollar Scratchcard

Monday May 25th 2009

A million dollar scratchcard prize has been won by a New York Lottery player who bought two $5 tickets for The Price Is Right instant win game. Betty Lou Ross, who is 70 years old and lives in Niagara County, had visited a store to buy tickets for the Mega Millions game, but she decided to have a go at The Price Is Right scratchcard as well.

The first ticket that Betty played didn’t win her anything, but the second one won her the top prize of $1,000,000. All New York Lottery prizes are paid in twenty annual instalments, so Betty will receive $50,000 (around $33,015 after taxes) every year until 2029.

After the million dollar scratchcard win, Betty said that her success had given her a new lease of life. “I feel like I can do anything now,” she said, and now that she has won a million dollar prize we don’t doubt it!

The New York Lottery was established over 40 years ago, and is currently the biggest and most profitable state lottery in the USA. The money it raises from the sale of lottery tickets is used to fund educational programmes, and a whopping $36.7 billion has been raised so far. $2.54 billion of that was raised in the 2008-09 fiscal year alone.

Although many players, like Betty, focus on the Mega Millions multi-state lottery, the New York Lottery offers its own 6 from 49 Lotto game as well as a wide selection of scratchcards costing anything from $1 to $30. And as Betty’s success playing The Price Is Right has demonstrated, it isn’t necessary to buy the most expensive ticket to win a million!

If you don’t live in New York state then you can’t participate in The Price Is Right game, but you can participate in the New York Lotto if you buy lottery tickets online. You can also participate in the massively popular Mega Millions game in the same way. Those of you who prefer lottery scratchcard games will find a large range of games that you can play for free or for cash prizes on our own Scratchcards page.
