The winning numbers were scheduled to be drawn at 10:59pm Eastern Time, but it was announced shortly afterwards that it could not take place on time.

There are 48 participating lotteries in Powerball and all must submit their sales and play data prior to the numbers being selected, but one state was still processing all this information when the draw should have started.

The Multi-State Lottery confirmed that the draw would still proceed ‘once it receives the outstanding submission’.

The statement added that ‘Powerball has stringent security requirements to protect the integrity of the game and remains committed to holding a drawing that gives all players a fair chance to win'.

Monday's draw was set to offer a record-breaking jackpot of $1.9 billion, a figure which was later recalculated to more than $2 billion after final ticket sales were taken into account.

The results were eventually published at around 9:00am Eastern Time on Tuesday, and one player won the jackpot.
