The lucky player picked the numbers 11, 28, 31, 46 and 59, plus Mega Ball 1, and became the first participant to match the full winning line since Shane Missler on January 5th. Missler, a 20-year-old from Florida, came forward a week later and announced that he would be retiring from his job. He also pledged to use his money to ‘do some good for humanity’.

Where the Ticket was Sold

The winning ticket was sold at the Lukoil gas station on Route 23 in the town of Riverdale, which is located about 25 miles northwest of New York City and has fewer than 5,000 residents. It is a busy commuter store, but owner Ameer Krass has said the winner is a regular customer, based on time and date information shared with him by state lottery officials.

“I know them, and they are one of our regulars, which is great,” he said. “That’s what we were hoping for. Although we have hundreds, maybe thousands of customers, we know the majority of them by face, by name.” However, a spokeswoman from the New Jersey Lottery has cautioned against speculating on the winner’s identity until the ticket has been validated.

New Jersey’s Biggest Win

The latest win is the largest lottery prize to have ever been won in New Jersey, and Riverdale is especially proud to have its moment in the sun. Mayor Paul Carelli said: “We’re happy for Ameer. We’re a small town. It’s our 15 minutes here in Riverdale, and we’re quite happy about it.”

The advertised jackpot for Friday’s drawing was $521 million, but it was bumped up to $533 following strong sales. The winner has one year to come forward and can then decide whether to accept the full amount in 30 annual installments or a one-off cash sum of $324.6 million.

“Hearty congratulations to New Jersey for their big Mega Millions win,” said Gordon Medenica, Mega Millions Lead Director and Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director. “The whole country can’t wait to meet the newest millionaire, but we all shared in the fun of playing.”

Next Jackpot

The Mega Millions jackpot will now reset to its minimum level of $40 million for the next draw on Tuesday night, giving fans of the game another chance to snap up a multimillion-dollar top prize. You can play by choosing numbers online or visiting authorised retailers in participating states.
