All Powerball winners are given a choice between taking their prize as a cash lump sum or opting for a series of annual payments. The Shearers went for the first option, which means they have received $30.2 million. They will have to pay tax on that amount, but they will still be left with a considerable fortune.

The win came thanks to a Quick Pick ticket. Ordinarily Myrna selects her own numbers, but on this occasion she arrived at her local Bookland retail store without her list, so she trusted fate to provide her with a good set of random numbers and hasn’t looked back since!

The store that sold the winning Powerball ticket isn’t left out of the celebrations – the owner received a $100,000 prize of his own for selling the jackpot winner. He had said that he hoped the winner was a regular customer, and he wasn’t disappointed.

This is the twelfth Powerball jackpot that has been won by a Pennsylvania Lottery player since the state started offering the game in 2002. Three of those jackpots have been won in the last 15 months alone, with the previous one coming as recently as 04 October 2008. On that occasion a jackpot worth $20 million was won by a syndicate of postal workers. There were 22 members, and they opted for the cash payout of $10.2 million, so each member took home $463,636.
