Power Play is an optional add-on available in some states that increases the value of non-jackpot Powerball prizes. Before the main numbers are drawn, a separate Power Play number is selected, which acts as a multiplier for all non-jackpot winnings.
Everyone who opted-in to Power Play and who wins a non-jackpot prize will have their cash multiplied by the Power Play number. The only exception is the Match 5 prize of $1 million, which becomes $2 million for Power Play ticket holders, no matter which multiplier is drawn.
The Power Play can be selected when completing your Powerball playslip, and costs an additional $1 per line. You cannot play it separately and you cannot opt in later. You do not need to pick an extra number to participate in Power Play; the number drawn by the lottery applies to all Power Players' tickets.
Powerball tickets in Idaho and Montana have Power Play added automatically (with a fixed ticket price of $3) and there is no option to remove it.
*Power Play is not available in California. State law dictates that all prizes must be paid out on a pari-mutuel basis – where the prize fund is determined by the number of tickets sold, and this money is split between winners. Power Play involves multiplying prizes by a fixed amount, so it is not allowed in California.
The Power Play can provide 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x the value of non-jackpot prizes, although the 10x multiplier is only available when the jackpot is worth less than $150 million.
As an example, matching the Powerball number on its own would normally net you $4, but if you add Power Play and the 10x multiplier is selected, you would get $40 instead. Not bad for matching just one number!
