Game History

Powerball is one of the biggest lottery games in the United States and regularly boasts eight, nine or even ten-figure jackpots. Read on to discover more about how this multi-state game came into existence and how changes in format have made Powerball one of the most popular and exciting lotteries in the world.

  • Powerball's roots can be traced back as far as September 1987, when lottery officials from Washington D.C., Iowa, Kansas, Oregon, Rhode Island and West Virginia joined to form the Multi-State Lottery Association.
  • In February 1988, the Multi-State Lottery Association launched a brand new lottery known as Lotto*America. Eight additional states (Wisconsin, Montana, Idaho, Minnesota, Indiana, South Dakota, Kentucky and Delaware) joined the game between August 1989 and January 1991.
  • Lotto*America was phased out in 1992 and Powerball was born. The first drawing took place on Saturday April 22 1992, with a two-drum draw machine and new ball sets being introduced.
  • Between April 1994 and November 1995, the states of Arizona, Nebraska, Louisiana, New Hampshire and Connecticut joined the Powerball family.
  • In July 1996, a number of live Powerball drawings were held at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. Special drawings have since taken place across the country to commemorate specific events or anniversaries.
  • New Mexico began offering Powerball in October 1996.
  • On March 7 2001, Power Play, an optional multiplier, was added to the game. For an extra $1, players could increase the value of any non-jackpot prize. The game continues to this day.
  • Powerball opened its doors, as Colorado, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Vermont, North Dakota, Tennessee, Maine, Oklahoma and North Carolina were all welcomed to the game between August 2001 and May 2006.
  • Florida and Arkansas both joined the game in 2009, with the former landing the responsibility of hosting future drawings.
  • 2010 was a big year for Powerball, as Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Virginia and Washington all joined in January, before Ohio and the U.S Virgin Islands began participating later in the year.
  • The price of a Powerball ticket increased to $2 ($3 including Power Play) in January 2012.
  • The state of California began selling Powerball tickets in 2013, but refused the offer the Power Play option, while Wyoming and Puerto Rico joined the following year.
  • In early October 2015, various changes were made to the game, with the number of balls in the main pool increasing from 59 to 69, while the Powerball pool decreased from 35 to 26. This significantly altered the odds of winning, with the chances of winning any prize increasing, however, the jackpot became more difficult to win.
  • On Wednesday January 13 2016, the Powerball jackpot reached a record-breaking $1.58 billion, the biggest prize total ever offered by any lottery in the world. The prize was shared between three ticket holders - John and Lisa Munford of Tennessee, David Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith from Florida, and Marvin and Mae Acosta of California.
  • On Wednesday March 27 2019, the Powerball jackpot reached $768 million, and was won by a single ticket bought in New Berlin, WI. This the largest single-ticket jackpot win in Powerball history.
  • Powerball tickets went on sale in Mississippi for the first time ever on January 30th 2020, after the launch of the state lottery in November 2019.
  • It was announced in March 2021 that draws will being to take place on Monday, in addition to the draws on Wednesday and Saturday, from August 23 2021.
  • The Powerball Double Play add-on was added by two more lotteries in the fall of 2023. Oklahoma Lottery had the first draw with the extra feature on 27th September 2023 while the U.S. Virgin Islands held it on 23rd October.
  • On Monday November 7 2022, the Powerball record was broken again as it topped $2 billion for the first time. A player from California, later revealed to be Edwin Castro, banked the jackpot of $2.04 billion.
  • Iowa and Mississippi lotteries added the Double Play option to Powerball tickets starting November 6, 2023. Double Play also launched in Kentucky a week later ahead of the draw on November 13.
  • On July 14, 2024, the DC Lottery became the 23rd jurisdiction to offer the Double Play feature.
  • On September 22, 2025, Kansas also joined the list of states offering Double Play, followed by North Carolina two weeks later on October 6.
  • The Connecticut Lottery joined the Double Play influx ahead of the drawing on November 5, 2025, offering the add-on game for the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Powerball jackpot?

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and rolls until there is a winner. The current jackpot is $48 Million.

Is the jackpot split if more than one player wins?

Yes. If multiple players match all the numbers, the jackpot is divided equally between the winning tickets.

What is the biggest jackpot ever won?

The biggest win in Powerball history is the $2.04 billion payout that went to Edwin Castro from California in November 2022. The jackpot has passed $1 billion several times.

Can I play Double Play on its own?

No, if Double Play is available in your state, it can only be played as an add-on alongside Powerball, not on its own. It costs an additional $1 per play.

What time do ticket sales close?

The cut-off time for ticket sales varies from state to state, but it is usually around an hour before the draw takes place.

What is the minimum age to play Powerball?

The minimum age depends on where you buy your ticket. In most locations, you must be at least 18 years old, but some states have different rules. For example, the minimum age in Nebraska is 19, while you must be 21 or older in Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana and Mississippi.

What do I do if I lose my ticket?

If you lose your ticket, immediately contact your state lottery to report it. Depending on the state, you may not be able to claim the prize at all, or you might be allowed to prove ownership by providing specific details about when and where you purchased it. It is a good idea to sign your ticket when you buy it so that nobody else can claim it belongs to them.

How do I claim a prize?

You must claim your prize from the state lottery where you purchased your ticket. Prizes up to $600 can be claimed from authorized retailers, while larger amounts must be claimed by mail or at a regional lottery office or headquarters.

How long do I have to claim a prize?

Claim deadlines differ by state, varying in length from 90 days to one year. If you win the jackpot and want to take the cash option, your state may require you to claim within 60 days.

Are Powerball winnings taxable?

Larger Powerball prizes are subject to federal taxes (24%–37%), plus applicable state and local taxes based on where you bought the ticket, not where you live.

What are the differences between cash and annuity when winning the jackpot?

Jackpot winners can choose between a lump sum or an annuity. The lump-sum option pays out the current jackpot cash pool all at once, while the annuity invests the funds to pay out a guaranteed income over 29 years. The annuity option accumulates investment returns over time alongside the initial prize, so the total payout is always significantly higher than the immediate cash lump sum.

Can I stay anonymous if I win the jackpot?

This all depends on where you bought your ticket. Many states nowadays allow winners to stay anonymous, or claim thorough a legal trust to effectively keep private. However, some states regard winner information as a matter of public record, so it is not possible to remain anonymous in these locations.
