Many New Jersey Lottery fans have been rewarded beyond their wildest dreams over the past few decades, with big payouts in every game. The largest wins have come in Mega Millions and Powerball, but Pick-6 and Jersey Cash 5 have also created a number of millionaires. Here are some of New Jersey’s top jackpots.
New Jersey made its first billionaire in spring 2024, when a ticket sold at Saker ShopRite in Neptune Township matched all the numbers. The winner had a year to come forward and waited almost nine months, finally making their claim anonymously just before Christmas. They took the cash payout of $537.5 million before taxes, while Richard Saker gave his $30,000 retailer’s commission to Fulfill Food Bank.
The Smith family – comprising mother Pearlie and her seven adult children – pocketed this huge jackpot with a ticket bought at a 7-Eleven on Chambers Street in Trenton, Mercer County. Church worker Pearlie said she was not a regular player but those numbers had popped into her head that week. They decided to take the lump sum of $284 million – about $35 million each when split between them – and set up a charitable foundation to help others.
After a long jackpot run propelled the top prize towards $50 million, James and Eileen Rath of Union, Union County, matched all the Pick-6 numbers to become NJ record-breakers. The lucky couple came forward quickly to claim their money and there has not been a bigger payout on the game since. The odds of winning are far better than Mega Millions or Powerball and the jackpot still regularly passes $20 million.
Claiming lottery prizes in New Jersey is straightforward, but you must cash it in within a year of the draw date (or a year of the end of game if it’s a scratch-off). Until you are ready to come forward, make sure the ticket is signed and keep it in a safe place.
There are a few options for claiming – based on the value of your win – but the majority of prizes can be collected from local retailers or by mail.
If you win a large prize such as a jackpot, you’ll have to decide whether to take it as an annuity or a lump sum. Unlike in some other states, you do have the option to stay anonymous.
Cash in your ticket at any New Jersey Lottery retailer. Alternatively, you can claim by mail.
All prizes of $600 or more require a claim form. You can file this form at a retailer, send it in by mail alongside your winning ticket, drop off your ticket and claim form at the NJ Lottery office in Trenton, or call the New Jersey Lottery directly to make an appointment.
Prizes of this value can be claimed digitally if the ticket is checked & scanned using the official NJ Lottery app. Winners will be taken through the claims process step-by-step in the app, including completing a digital claim form.
