The winner of the $800 million Mega Millions jackpot from July 28 has claimed their money, but their identity remains a mystery - at least, for now!
It was revealed shortly after the drawing in late July that a single ticket holder from Florida had matched all the numbers - 34, 48, 49, 59 and 70, plus the Mega Ball of 12 - to bring an end to a run of more than four months without a winner.
The winning ticket was a Quick Pick sold at Wawa No. 5185, located at 14510 State Road 70 E. in Bradenton, which is near Sarasota and just east of Lakewood Ranch.
There was no word about the winner for a few weeks, but Florida Lottery officials have now confirmed that the jackpot has been claimed. FL Lottery Secretary Reginald Dixon said in a statement: “We are thrilled to congratulate Florida’s newest Mega Millions jackpot winner on this incredible, life-changing moment.”
It has also been confirmed that the winner took the cash option of $344.2 million before taxes, rather than the annuity, and that their location is Bradenton, but at the moment their name has not yet been revealed - instead it is listed as ‘exempt pursuant to F.S. 24.1051.”
Florida has traditionally been a state where lottery wins are regarded as a matter of open record and it is not possible to stay anonymous, but a relatively recent law change (May 2022) has allowed winners to remain private for at least a short period of time.
If you win $250,000 or more in the Sunshine State, you are not required to go public for the first 90 days after you claim your prize. The FL Lottery will then disclose your identity if someone requests that the information be shared. For a jackpot worth hundreds of millions, it is unlikely that the latest winner will stay out of the spotlight for long.
The win ranks as the tenth-largest in Mega Millions history and the second-biggest in Florida. A group known as Saltines Holdings, LLC claimed a jackpot of $1.602 billion in August 2023 with a ticket purchased at a Publix in Neptune Beach.
The Mega Millions jackpot has already shot back up past $150 million, with draws taking place every Tuesday and Friday night. Keep an eye on the Mega Millions Numbers page to follow the latest results as they come in.
