Powerball’s long jackpot run came to an end on Wednesday night as a single player from New Jersey won $847 million - the ninth-largest prize to have ever been seen in the game.

The winning numbers were 15, 34, 41, 53 and 56, with a Powerball of 21, generating more than 1.1 million payouts across all the prize categories. Only one ticket holder matched all the numbers, instantly catapulting them into Powerball’s all-time top 10.

Check out the Powerball Numbers page for November 4 to discover more details about the draw, including all the payout information. The Power Play multiplier was 2X, doubling the prize amounts for hundreds of thousands of players.

The jackpot had not previously been won since August 12, when a ticket holder from Illinois won $1.04 billion, and lottery bosses were delighted to see another huge win just three months later.

“Back-to-back jackpot runs resulting in prizes of this magnitude are a testament to the excitement Powerball generates,” said Stephen Durrell, Chair of the Powerball Product Group and Executive Director of the Kansas Lottery. “We're thrilled to celebrate another life-changing win and congratulate the lucky ticket holder.”

Glory for New Jersey

It is the 13th time that someone from New Jersey has won the Powerball jackpot, and comfortably the largest Powerball prize ever paid out in the Garden State. It is not an overall state record, however, as a Mega Millions player won $1.13 billion in March 2024.

The latest winner has one year to come forward and claim their money, so there may not be any more news for a while if they decide to seek financial advice before contacting the NJ Lottery. They can also stay anonymous if they do not want to go public with their identity and story.

Another decision facing jackpot winners is whether to take the annuity or the cash option. In New Jersey, you must actually choose at the time of purchase how you would like to be paid, although you can still decide to take the lump sum when you claim if you initially leave the box blank. The cash option for Wednesday’s jackpot was $363.1 million.

For now, the Powerball jackpot will reset to $20 million ahead of the next draw on Saturday, so the 10x multiplier will be back in play until the top prize goes back above $150 million.

It remains to be seen whether the next jackpot run also makes it into the top 10, although there probably won’t be time for that to happen before the turn of the year. Mega Millions recently crossed the $500 million mark, so it may become the focus for big jackpot hunters.
