California Daily 4 gives you the chance to win thousands of dollars every day just by matching four numbers from 0 to 9. You can even play the game in a number of different ways.
Drawings take place immediately after ticket sales close at 6:30 PM PT.
To win a Daily 4 prize, all the numbers you've picked must match all the numbers drawn. Each number is independent of the other three numbers. So, if the winning numbers are 1-1-2-3, you must have a one, another one, a two and a three in your chosen numbers to win. You must then also meet the requirements of your playstyle, for example matching them in the correct order if you submitted a Straight wager.

Most lotteries only have one way to play, but Daily 4 works differently. In this game, you can choose between three playstyles - Straight, Box, and Straight/Box (more details below).
Simply pick your favorite four numbers from 0 to 9. You can use the same number multiple times, and doing so will affect the odds and prizes for Box plays. Alternatively, use the Quick Pick option on your play slip to have your numbers randomly generated for you.
Each play costs $1, and you can play up to five times per playslip. You can also play the same numbers and playstyle in multiple (1-7 or 14) consecutive draws - simply mark Advance Play.
Your numbers need to match the winning numbers drawn in exactly the same order.

A combination of both playstyles. Your $1 play is split evenly between Straight and Box. If you match the winning numbers in the exact order drawn, you win half the Straight prize and half the Box prize. Match the numbers drawn in any other order, and you win half the Box prize.
Prize amounts in Daily 4 aren’t fixed, so the payouts vary from draw to draw, but if you win a Straight you may receive around $5,000. The prize fund for each playstyle is determined by the number of tickets sold, and this is divided equally between the number of winners.
When you make a Straight/Box play, your $1 is split equally between each playstyle, giving you two ways to win. For a Straight, you can win by matching your four numbers in the exact order of the winning numbers. For a Box, you can also win if your numbers match the four winning numbers in any order.
If, for example, your numbers are 1-2-3-4 with a Straight/Box playstyle, and the winning numbers are also 1-2-3-4, you win both Straight and Box. If the Straight prize was $1,000 and the Box prize was $500, you would win half of each: $500 + $250 = a total prize of $750.
Simply ask for a specific playstyle. If you don't specify one, you will receive the Straight playstyle by default.
The pari-mutuel prize system used in California means the amount you can win is determined by the prize fund divided by the number of winners for each prize tier.
Many players opt for the same popular numbers - for example, 9999. If 9999 is drawn, the prize would have to be shared between alllll those '9999' players, leading to smaller prizes for everyone. However, if you win with a set of less-common numbers, there won’t be many other winners to share with. Chances are, you'll win a bigger prize!
For every $1 spent by players on Daily 4, $0.95 goes back to the community - distributed to CA public schools and colleges, paid out in prizes, and retailer compensation.
You have 180 days from the draw date to claim your winnings.
If a jackpot, or any other prize, is not claimed within 180 days of the draw date, the unclaimed funds are allocated to California public education and can no longer be recovered.
