Monday September 12th 2016

Plans are being finalized by attorneys for the winner of a Powerball prize worth $487 million to collect their reward. The prize was originally won on Saturday July 30th, but the successful ticket holder has taken some time to collect their windfall, with an announcement expected to come today.

The winning ticket was purchased in Raymond, New Hampshire, a town that is home to around 10,000 people, and matched the numbers 11, 17, 21, 23, 32 and Powerball 5. The prize is the eighth-largest in U.S. lottery history and it is thought that the lump sum option would award the winner with a pre-tax total of $330.6 million. It remains unclear as to whether they will be named or even make an appearance, with attorneys only announcing that the mysterious winner has philanthropic intentions for the money. The whole town of Raymond has been eagerly anticipating news of the jackpot winner’s identity for a number of weeks now. Contact with New Hampshire lottery officials was originally made in August, but no details of the lucky ticket holder were released, with lawyers possibly representing the winner making enquiries and asking procedural questions.

The Hannaford supermarket in Raymond has already benefitted from the jackpot win, collecting $75,000 for selling the winning Powerball ticket. The store plans add an additional $25,000 to the fund before dividing the money between six charitable organisations, with End 68 Hours of Hunger, the Raymond Coalition for Youth, the SNHS Raymond Food Pantry, the Providence Baptist Church Food Pantry, the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry, and the Raymond Baptist Church Food Pantry all benefitting. In an interview with the Boston Globe, Eric Bloom, a spokesman for Hannaford, said: “There's an awful lot of need in the community and this is an opportunity for us to create some additional winners in the New Hampshire area," before adding that the company hopes to generate a more winners.

While Powerball fans await news of the winner’s identity, this Wednesday will see a similarly impressive prize up for grabs in the form of an estimated $222 million. To be in with a chance of winning this colossal jackpot, Powerball tickets are available to purchase online or from authorised retailers in any of the 47 participating states and jurisdictions. Good luck!

*The lucky ticket holders came forward to collect the $487 million jackpot later in the day on Monday 12th September, but opted to remain anonymous. Claiming the sum through the Robin Egg 2016 Nominee Trust, the winners intend to donate a percentage of the windfall to charity. Speaking at a press conference, William Shaheen of Shaheen and Gordon, the law firm representing the trust, spoke highly of the family: “In order for them to do good things, they need anonymity, but there couldn’t be two better people or a better family to win this money than these people, because they are going to do great things with it.”
