The Michigan Lottery has launched a new game, Daily 5, and draws have already started being held! Here's what you need to know about this high-paying five-digit lottery draw game.
Daily 5 was officially announced on August 21, with the first draw taking place a few days after on August 24. Usually, there's a bit more time between the announcement and the launch! The upside is that, since the game is already out, we can give you all the details upfront rather than waiting for the lottery to confirm them following the announcement.
If you've played the Michigan Lottery's Daily 3 or Daily 4 games before, Daily 5 is going to feel very familiar. In Daily 5, you'll need to select five digits (0-9) along with a Play Type: the rules that determine how your line must match the winning line in order to qualify for a prize. Here are the different play types on offer:
Straight – Match all five digits in drawn order.
Box – Match all five digits in any order.
2-Way – Half your bet goes on a Straight, the other half on a Box. Matching all five digits in exact order wins you half of both prizes, while matching all five in any other order wins just half the Box.
1-Off – To win, match four digits in the correct position with the remaining digit either 1 above or 1 below your pick (e.g. if you picked 12345, and the winning digits were 12344, you'd still win). If all your digits are perfect matches, you win a bigger prize.
Wheeled – Win the top prize by matching all five digits in any order. This play type costs a lot more than normal – fair, since you can win the top prize of $50,000 with great odds.
There are two draws every day: Midday, which is held at 12:59 PM ET, and Evening, which is at 7:29 PM ET.
At the time of writing, one of each daily draw has taken place. Let's take a quick look at them.

Both draws produced an outcome referred to as a "60-Way", as in, you can create 60 unique arrangements of digits using the winning numbers. The other Way options are 5, 10, 20, 30, and 120. Playing more Ways improves your odds for Box plays, but reduces the prize if you manage to win.
The Midday draw saw 16 Box winners and 30 2-Way winners who only won the Box portion of the prize. The Evening draw had very similar outcomes too, with another 16 Box winners, 29 Box-only 2-Way winners, and one 1-Off winner, meaning each draw had just 46 winners.
That may not sound like much, but this is the first draw of a new lottery game which was launched at very short notice without much (if any) fanfare, so we would expect to see more players over the course of the next few draws. Another thing to consider is that Daily 5 is much tougher to win than its sister games Daily 3 and Daily 4. Although there were only 92 winners for the first draw day, they shared a total of $53,215 in prizes won, with the smallest prize on the table valued at $415. Not a bad haul!
Currently, this game is available online using an official MI Lottery account and in stores. If you're outside of the state, you won't be able to play. However, some states such as Ohio and Florida have their own local versions of Daily 5. Many more states also host local equivalents of Daily 3 and Daily 4, too.
