The ticket, which matched all five main numbers and the Mega Ball, won $800 million and is worth $261.6 million (after taxes) as a lump sum cash payment or more if the winner opts for annuity payments. Picking the lump sum means that 24% of the winnings goes to mandatory federal tax withholding.
The July 28 Drawing
The numbers drawn in the July 28 Mega Millions event were 34, 48, 49, 59, 70, and the Mega Ball was 12. The odds of matching all six numbers for the jackpot win are 1 in 290,472,336, meaning that this win had roughly a 0.00000034% chance of happening. That’s comparable to finding a single marked grain of sand in 12 cubic feet of sand with 290 million individual grains.
The Florida resident was not the only winner of this event. There were also two winners of the five ball tier, one of which won a 3x multiplier, turning the standard $1 million prize into $3 million. The other won the 5x multiplier, making their winnings $5 million.
